Know the home, know the fault
Properties in this part of Devon range from mid nineteenth century homes built for miners at the southern edge of the settlement to distinct Bedford style architecture. The area is expanding as a residential base for people commuting to Plymouth, alongside a sizeable retired population and visitors exploring Dartmoor. In these varied households, freezers are relied upon to store batch-cooked meals for commuters or provisions for those living in outlying agricultural communities. Whether a chest freezer is kept in a utility space or an upright model sits in the main kitchen, keeping food frozen is the main priority. When a freezer stops maintaining the correct temperature, the compressor might run constantly to compensate, which sometimes triggers a temperature alarm. Heavy ice build-up is another fault that develops, eventually causing drawers to stick and reducing the available storage space. This icing up can happen if the door seal splits or loses its magnetic grip, allowing warm room air to enter and condense on the cooling elements. Defrost heaters or thermostats can also fail, leaving the appliance unable to clear its own frost, which eventually stops it from freezing food properly and forces the motor to work harder. We travel out to homes near Whitchurch Down and across the surrounding villages to repair upright and chest freezers in the home. During a visit, we look at appliances that are not cold enough, investigate constant running and temperature alarms, and replace faulty door seals. We also resolve heavy ice build-up and drawers that stick. While we repair electric cooking equipment alongside refrigeration units, we do not work on any gas appliances.

Call 01752 922765Thick ice build-up usually happens when warm air enters the cabinet. A torn or loose door seal is a primary cause, as it lets room humidity inside to freeze on the cooling coils. A failure in the automatic defrost system, such as a broken defrost heater or sensor, will also allow heavy frost to accumulate and cause drawers to stick.
A freezer compressor runs constantly when it struggles to reach the set temperature. This happens if the condenser coils are covered in thick dust, restricting heat transfer. It can also occur if the thermostat is faulty and fails to signal that the cabinet is cold enough, or if a failing door seal is letting cold air escape into the room.
The temperature alarm sounds to warn you that the internal cabinet is not cold enough to keep food frozen. This can be triggered by a faulty compressor, a broken evaporator fan failing to circulate cold air, or heavy ice insulating the cooling elements. We look at these components during a visit to find out why the appliance is struggling.
