Know the home, know the fault
The town is mostly built on the steep west side of the Kingsbridge Estuary, and holiday homes have been a feature of the area since the eighteenth century. In properties that are left empty for periods, a freezer might be switched off and on again, or left running with very little inside it. A chest freezer in an outbuilding or a built-in upright model in a holiday kitchen needs to maintain a stable temperature to keep food frozen. When a freezer stops working correctly, it is usually a problem with temperature control or ice build-up. Heavy ice inside the cabinet can make drawers stick and reduce the available storage space. This happens when warm air enters the appliance, perhaps through a split door seal or a door that has been left slightly open. If the compressor runs constantly or a temperature alarm sounds, the thermostat might be faulty or the condenser coils could be covered in dust, restricting airflow. A freezer that is not cold enough will eventually allow food to thaw, which is a clear sign that the cooling system is struggling. We travel out to repair appliances in homes across the area, including out towards Malborough. During a visit, we look at upright and chest freezers that are icing up or failing to freeze. We check door seals for gaps, test thermostats for accurate temperature readings, and inspect the compressor and defrost heaters. Please note that we only repair electric appliances and do not work on gas cookers or gas hobs.

Call 01752 922765Thick ice usually forms when warm air enters the cabinet. This happens if the door seal is torn or if the door is not closing properly. In frost-free models, a failed defrost heater or timer will also cause ice to accumulate. We check the seals and the defrost components to find the fault.
A temperature alarm sounds when the interior gets too warm. This can be caused by a faulty thermostat failing to switch the compressor on, or by a lack of airflow around the condenser coils. We inspect the cooling circuit and the control board to identify why the appliance is not staying cold enough.
If the compressor never stops, the freezer is struggling to reach its target temperature. A damaged door seal letting cold air escape will cause this issue. It might also point to a failing thermostat or a blocked capillary tube in the cooling system. We test these internal parts to see why the motor is overworked.
