Know the home, know the fault

Properties in the centre of Kingsbridge retain many eighteenth- and nineteenth-century buildings. In older properties, kitchen space can be tight, so upright or chest freezers are sometimes placed in utility rooms to save room. Because this settlement sits at the northern end of an estuary extending to the sea, it is a popular tourist destination with holiday accommodation alongside permanent homes. Families with children attending the large secondary school and visitors staying in holiday lets rely on freezers for bulk food storage. When a unit is packed full, the appliance has to work harder to maintain its internal temperature. A freezer that is not cold enough might trigger a temperature alarm or run constantly. This happens when the compressor tries to compensate for warm air entering the cabinet. A split or degraded door seal is a typical reason for this, letting ambient air mix with the cold interior. The moisture from that air condenses and freezes, leading to heavy ice build-up. When ice accumulates on the evaporator coils, it restricts airflow, causing drawers to stick and stopping the appliance from freezing food properly. Defrost heaters or thermostats can also fail, leaving the system unable to clear frost automatically. When visiting a property, we look at upright and chest freezers that are not freezing or are icing up. We check for heavy ice build-up, drawers that stick, and door seal faults. If a unit has temperature alarms sounding and constant running, we inspect the compressor and defrost components to find the underlying issue. All Appliance Care repairs domestic appliances in your home. We do not repair gas appliances.

Thick ice inside an upright freezer usually points to warm air entering the cabinet. A split or degraded door seal allows ambient moisture to mix with the cold interior, where it condenses and freezes. If the door seal is intact, the defrost heater or thermostat might have failed, preventing the appliance from clearing frost automatically.

A freezer runs constantly when it struggles to reach its set temperature. This happens if the lid seal is compressed, letting cold air escape. It can also occur if the condenser coils are covered in dust, restricting heat transfer, or if the appliance is packed too tightly, which prevents cold air from circulating around the stored food.

A temperature alarm sounds when the internal cabinet becomes too warm to store food safely. This can happen if the door has been left open, or if heavy ice build-up on the evaporator coils is blocking airflow. A failing compressor or a faulty temperature sensor will also prevent the unit from staying cold enough.
