Know the home, know the fault
In both older permanent residences and modern holiday accommodation, freestanding electric cookers are relied upon to prepare meals. When these appliances develop a fault, it disrupts the daily kitchen routine for residents and visiting holidaymakers alike.
Why electric cookers go wrong
What we look for
A freestanding cooker combines an oven, a grill and a hob into a single unit, meaning a failure in one section can be frustrating. Solid plate or ceramic hob zones might stop heating if the element burns out or the energy regulator behind the control knob fails. Inside the oven cavity, a blown fan element or a faulty thermostat will leave the main compartment completely cold even while the indicator light stays on. Grill elements can warp and split with use, which will trip the household electrics the moment the dial is turned. Door hinges also weaken, preventing the seal from closing tightly and allowing heat to escape, which leads to uneven baking and damaged control switches.

When we visit
From your call to repaired
When visiting homes in Salcombe or nearby places like Malborough, we inspect the appliance to find the cause of the breakdown. We test the oven and grill heating circuits, check the hob rings or zones for continuity, and examine the selector switches, thermostats and internal wiring for signs of electrical failure. We also look at mechanical parts such as door catches and hinges. We repair these electrical faults on freestanding models, though we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliances.

Call 01752 922765This usually happens when an element has split and exposed its internal wiring to the metal casing, creating a short circuit to earth. It can affect the main oven element, the grill or a hob ring. We test the appliance with an insulation resistance meter to identify which component is causing the electrics to trip.
When the fan spins but the oven stays cold, the circular element surrounding the fan blade has likely failed. The thermostat might still click, and the indicator lights will illuminate, but no heat is generated. Replacing the blown element restores the heating function without needing to replace the entire cooker.
A ceramic hob zone will stop working if the heating ribbon under the glass breaks or if the energy regulator behind the control knob fails. If the ring only works on maximum heat and cannot be turned down, the regulator is at fault. We test both parts to find the failure.
