Homes in Totnes

Know the home, know the fault

Properties near the top of the River Dart estuary range from modern builds to historic merchants houses dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Totnes is believed to have a higher number of listed buildings per person than any other town, which can mean kitchens are sometimes fitted into older, less conventional spaces. When a freestanding fridge is placed in a confined alcove or a room with uneven historic floors, it needs careful levelling and adequate ventilation. Without enough airflow around the condenser coils at the back, the compressor has to work harder to dissipate heat, which can lead to cooling issues over time. Tourism linked to interest in the local transition town status also means some properties are used as guest accommodation, where appliances might see varied use. A fridge struggling to maintain temperature might have a failing thermostat or a degraded door seal letting warm air inside. When warm air enters, condensation forms and can freeze on the back wall, or overwhelm the drainage system, leaving water pooling under the salad crispers or leaking onto the floor. If the appliance is constantly running, clicking, or making new noises, the compressor or its start relay might be struggling. Uneven cooling is another issue, sometimes caused by a blocked internal fan or ice restricting the air channels between compartments. Faulty interior lights or broken hinges can also make the appliance difficult to use day to day. We repair appliances in customers' homes. During a visit, we look at fridges that are warm or not cooling evenly, investigate water pooling inside or on the floor, and check for ice building up on the back wall. We also trace the source of constant running, clicking or new noises, and replace faulty lights, thermostats and door seals.

Water pooling under the salad crispers usually happens when the internal defrost drain hole becomes blocked with food debris or packaging. Condensation runs down the back wall and, unable to escape, overflows into the base of the fridge. Clearing the drain tube usually resolves the issue and stops water leaking onto the floor.

A fridge compressor that runs constantly is struggling to reach the set temperature. This can be caused by a failing thermostat, a degraded door seal letting warm air in, or a build-up of dust on the condenser coils. A clicking noise alongside this usually points to a faulty start relay trying to engage the compressor.

Ice builds up when warm air enters the fridge and freezes on the cold back plate. This is most commonly caused by a torn or flattened door seal that no longer closes flush against the cabinet. A faulty thermostat that keeps the cooling cycle running for too long can also cause excessive ice formation.
