Know the home, know the fault

The area at the head of the River Dart estuary has a high concentration of listed buildings, including merchants' houses built during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The town sits adjacent to the South Devon National Landscape, drawing visitors to the region. Households here might use a large American-style fridge freezer or a standard integrated model hidden behind a cabinet door. With alternative private schools and a tourist trade drawn to the transition town status, local kitchens handle a lot of food storage. A broken appliance creates immediate problems with keeping groceries fresh, especially when feeding a busy family. When a fridge freezer develops a fault, the symptoms vary depending on the internal parts involved. Sometimes the fridge section gets warm while the freezer still works, which points to an issue with the air damper or defrost heater failing to circulate cold air between the two zones. Frost and ice build-up inside the cabinet usually means a blocked drain hole or a faulty door seal letting in room air. You might notice water leaks inside the compartments or pooling onto the floor, often caused by a frozen defrost drain. Noisy running and faulty controls are other issues that stop the appliance from maintaining the correct temperature, leading to spoiled food. Whether the appliance is located near the centre or over in Bridgetown, we carry out the work directly in your home. When looking at a faulty fridge freezer, we check the compressor, thermostats, and defrost systems to find out why one side or both have stopped working properly. Alongside refrigeration units, we also repair washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, and electric cookers, but we do not work on gas hobs or any gas appliance.

This happens when cold air cannot circulate from the freezer into the fridge compartment. It points to a failure in the defrost system, such as a broken heater or timer, which causes ice to block the air damper. A faulty evaporator fan motor will also stop the cold air from moving upwards.

Water pooling under the appliance usually comes from a blocked or frozen defrost drain. During the automatic defrost cycle, melted ice is supposed to flow down a tube into a pan near the compressor. If that tube gets clogged with debris or freezes solid, the water overflows inside the cabinet and leaks out.

Ice builds up when warm, moist room air enters the cabinet and freezes on the cold surfaces. A torn or loose door seal is a major cause of this issue. It can also happen if the door is left open slightly, or if the internal defrost thermostat has stopped working properly.
