Know the home, know the fault

The area saw rapid growth throughout the 1980s and 1990s alongside the construction of the A38 Devon Expressway, and more recently, the old paper mill buildings are being converted into homes and shops. In older properties with smaller kitchens, built-in and combination microwaves are a practical way to save counter space. When these integrated units fail, they cannot simply be unplugged and swapped out like a freestanding model, requiring an in-home repair instead. A combination microwave will sometimes run but fail to heat. This happens when the magnetron, high voltage capacitor or diode stops working, preventing the unit from generating microwave energy even though the internal lights and cooling fan still operate. Another issue is a turntable that will not rotate, which points to a broken synchronous motor beneath the cavity floor or a snapped drive coupling. Door latch and switch faults will also stop a microwave from starting. The door mechanism contains multiple microswitches that must engage in a specific sequence to confirm the door is securely closed before the control board allows the cooking cycle to begin. During a visit, we look at built-in and combination models to identify why they will not heat or turn. We test the internal door switches, inspect the turntable motor and examine the controls and displays to find the underlying fault. As a domestic appliance repair service, we work on electric and induction cooking appliances in your home, though we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

When a microwave sounds like it is running but the food remains cold, the fault usually lies within the high voltage circuit. The magnetron, diode or capacitor may have failed. Because these components store lethal amounts of electricity even when unplugged, they require professional testing to identify the exact part responsible for the lack of heat.

A turntable that no longer rotates is usually caused by a faulty synchronous motor located under the floor of the microwave cavity. Alternatively, the plastic drive coupling that connects the motor to the glass tray might be cracked or stripped. We inspect both the motor and the coupling during a repair visit.

If the display works but the microwave will not start, the door switches are the most likely cause. The door latch contains several microswitches that act as a safety mechanism. If one of these switches fails to register that the door is closed, the main control board will prevent the appliance from starting a cooking cycle.
