Know the home, know the fault

Properties along the coast in the south west of England vary greatly in age and size. Near the harbour, narrow streets feature small terraced cottages built during or before the nineteenth century. Older terraces often have a small kitchen, which can dictate the size and placement of an electric oven. Further inland, residential housing generally dates from the nineteen thirties to the nineteen seventies. Whether an oven is built into a modern fitted kitchen or stands alone in an older cottage, it requires adequate ventilation to prevent components from overheating during extended use. A blown element is a primary cause when an electric oven fails to heat. A fan oven might circulate cold air if the circular element surrounding the fan blade has failed, while uneven cooking points to a faulty fan motor struggling to distribute heat. If the appliance trips the electrics, it is caused by moisture or degradation inside one of the heating elements creating a short circuit to earth. Other issues include faulty thermostats failing to regulate temperature, broken control switches, or clocks that prevent the oven from turning on. Door hinges weaken over time, and worn seals allow heat to escape, which forces the appliance to work harder and can damage adjacent kitchen cabinets. We repair appliances in customers' homes across the area, including places like Cowtown. Our visits cover electric ovens that will not heat or only heat on some functions, uneven cooking, and fan oven faults. We also look at ovens that trip the electrics, faulty thermostats, controls and clocks, as well as door hinges, seals and glass. We do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

An electric oven tripping the electrics points to a fault within a heating element. The internal insulation inside the element degrades, allowing the electrical current to short to the outer metal casing. We inspect the elements and internal wiring to locate the short circuit.

This happens when the circular heating element surrounding the fan blade fails. The fan motor continues to circulate air, but the broken element cannot generate heat. We look at ovens that will not heat, checking the elements, faulty thermostats and control switches to find the fault.

We look at door hinges, seals and glass during our repair visits. A door hanging open points to worn or bent hinges, or a damaged door seal preventing it from shutting tight. Heat escaping from a loose door can melt control knobs and damage surrounding kitchen units.
