Know the home, know the fault

Properties around Tavistock range from mid-nineteenth-century miners' houses at the southern edge to modern builds for commuters travelling to Plymouth. The area also features distinct Bedford style architecture and serves as a base for visitors exploring Dartmoor. In these varied kitchens, electric ovens are heavily relied upon, whether preparing meals after a long commute or catering for guests. Built-in single and double ovens are fitted into cabinets, while freestanding electric cookers slot between worktops. A sudden failure disrupts meal preparation, leaving households without a primary cooking method. When an electric oven stops working, the issue is usually isolated to a few key components. A fan oven that blows cold air while the indicator light remains on points to a failed heating element. If the appliance trips the electrics the moment it is switched on, the element has likely ruptured and shorted to earth. Uneven cooking or food burning on one side suggests the fan motor is struggling to circulate hot air. Heat escaping from the front of the cavity means the door hinges have weakened or the rubber seal has perished. We also inspect faulty thermostats that fail to regulate temperature, along with unresponsive controls and broken clocks that prevent the oven from turning on. During a visit, we look at ovens that will not heat or only heat on some functions, uneven cooking, fan oven faults, and appliances that trip the power. We also inspect door hinges, seals, glass, faulty thermostats, controls, and clocks. All Appliance Care repairs electric and induction cooking appliances, but we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs, or any gas appliance.

This happens when an electrical component shorts to earth. The most likely cause is a split or ruptured heating element. As the element heats up and expands, the internal wire touches the outer casing, causing the circuit breaker to trip. A faulty fan motor or damaged wiring can also cause this issue.

If the fan motor is spinning and the indicator light is on but the cavity remains cold, the circular heating element has likely failed. The element surrounds the fan at the back of the oven and can burn out over time, stopping it from generating heat while the other components continue to function.

Heat escapes when the door does not close tightly against the cavity. This is usually caused by worn door hinges that have lost their tension, preventing a proper seal. A perished, torn, or flattened rubber door seal will also allow hot air to leak out, which leads to uneven cooking and longer baking times.
