Know the home, know the fault
The town sits just east of Dartmoor and enjoys a milder climate with less rainfall than the moorland. Today, this remains a busy seaside holiday destination with many holiday lets and permanent residences. In these varied kitchens, a cooker hood works hard to remove cooking odours and airborne grease, whether it vents directly outside or recirculates air through carbon filters. When an extractor hood loses suction, the kitchen quickly fills with steam and cooking smells. This happens when the motor fails to turn or when grease builds up heavily in the mesh filters, restricting airflow. A noisy or vibrating fan usually points to worn motor bearings or an impeller that has become unbalanced by accumulated cooking fats. Sometimes the fan will not run at all because the main control switch has failed. Failed lights are another issue, which might just need replacement bulbs, but can also be caused by a faulty light switch or a blown transformer inside the unit. We repair electric cooking appliances and extractor hoods in your home, though we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765A vibrating motor is usually caused by an unbalanced fan impeller. Over time, cooking grease builds up unevenly on the fan blades, throwing them off balance as they spin. Worn motor bearings can also create a loud rumbling sound. We look at noisy or vibrating motors during our repair visits.
If replacing the bulbs does not fix the issue, the fault might lie in the light switch assembly or the internal wiring. Many modern hoods also use a small transformer to power halogen or LED lights, and this component can fail. We test these electrical parts during our visit.
Poor suction happens when the motor is running but air cannot flow freely. This is heavily influenced by blocked mesh grease filters or saturated carbon filters in recirculating models. If the fan will not run at all, a failed control switch or a broken motor is the likely cause.
