Homes in Teignmouth

Know the home, know the fault

The housing stock along the northern side of the River Teign estuary reflects a mix of periods. As a busy seaside holiday destination, some properties serve as holiday lets where appliances endure intensive use during the summer months. Even with a milder climate than nearby Dartmoor, drying laundry indoors remains necessary, making a working tumble dryer essential for both permanent residents and holiday accommodation owners. When a dryer runs but fails to heat, the issue usually lies with the heating element or the thermal overload cut-out thermostats. In holiday lets where multiple guests use the machine, lint filters can become blocked, which restricts airflow and trips these safety thermostats. A drum that refuses to turn is typically caused by a snapped drive belt or a failed motor capacitor. If a machine stops mid-cycle or will not start at all, the door catch, control board or moisture sensors might be at fault. Condenser models rely on a pump to move extracted water into the collection container, and a blockage here will halt the drying process completely. Noisy running often points to worn support rollers, tensioner pulleys or drum bearings. We repair appliances in customers' homes. During a repair, we look at dryers that run but do not heat, drums that will not turn, and machines that stop mid-cycle or refuse to start. We also investigate condenser and water container faults, alongside diagnosing the cause of noisy running. While we fix electric washing machines, washer dryers and ovens, we do not work on gas appliances.

A dryer blowing cold air usually has a blown heating element or a tripped thermal overload thermostat. Thermostats trip when airflow is restricted, which happens if the lint filter or condenser unit is blocked. We can test the element and thermostats to identify which component needs replacing to restore heat.

The most frequent reason for a drum failing to turn is a snapped drive belt. If you can spin the drum very easily by hand with no resistance, the belt has likely broken. Alternatively, the motor start capacitor might have failed, meaning the motor lacks the power to begin turning.

Condenser dryers stop mid-cycle if the water collection container is full or if the machine thinks it is full. This happens when the pump that moves water from the bottom tray to the container fails or gets blocked with lint. Faulty moisture sensors can also cause cycles to end prematurely.
