Know the home, know the fault

With the area remaining a popular seaside holiday location, some local kitchens serve busy rental properties where dishwashers face heavy use from visiting families. In other parts of the community, where plans are focused on providing affordable housing, domestic kitchens rely on these machines to manage daily family life. Whether installed in a period property or a newer build, a dishwasher needs a stable, level floor to operate without leaking or vibrating. When a dishwasher fails to drain, the issue is usually found in the filter system, the drain pump or a blockage where the waste hose joins the sink plumbing. Machines that leave dishes wet or cold at the end of a cycle have developed a heating fault, which might involve a blown element or a faulty control board relay. Poor cleaning results are another issue, pointing to blocked spray arms that cannot rotate freely or a failing wash motor that lacks the pressure to force water through the jets. If a machine will not start at all, the door latch mechanism or the main control module might be preventing the cycle from initiating. Leaks can stem from a degraded door seal or a split internal hose. When visiting homes here or in nearby Shaldon, we look at draining faults and water left in the base, poor cleaning results and spray arm problems, heating faults and dishes left wet, leaks and door seal problems, as well as error codes and machines that will not start. We repair electric appliances, but we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Water pooling in the base usually means the machine cannot drain. This happens when food debris blocks the central filter, or if a foreign object jams the drain pump impeller. A blockage in the waste hose or the sink plumbing connection will also stop dirty water from escaping at the end of a wash cycle.

Dishes remain wet when the appliance fails to heat the water during the final rinse. The residual heat is required to evaporate moisture from the load. This points to a failed heating element, a broken thermostat, or a fault on the main control board that stops power reaching the heater circuit.

Spray arms rely on water pressure to rotate. If the wash motor is failing, it cannot generate enough force to spin them. Alternatively, the small exit jets on the arms themselves might be blocked by seeds or hard food particles, which disrupts the water flow and prevents the arms from moving during the cycle.
