Know the home, know the fault
Freestanding electric cookers are fitted across these different property types, from permanent residences to seaside holiday lets. A freestanding cooker combines an oven, grill and hob in a single unit, which makes it a practical choice for kitchens where built-in appliances are not fitted. When a fault develops, the entire unit does not necessarily need replacing, as individual components can be tested and swapped out.
Why electric cookers go wrong
What we look for
Heating failures are a typical issue with electric cookers. If the main oven runs cold while the fan still turns, the circular element surrounding the fan motor has usually failed. When a solid plate or radiant ring on the hob stops heating, the element itself or the energy regulator behind the control knob might be at fault. Cookers that trip the household electrics when turned on are generally suffering from an earth leak, which happens when the internal insulation of a heating element breaks down. Door hinges can also weaken over time, preventing the oven from sealing properly and allowing heat to escape, which leads to uneven cooking and longer baking times.

When we visit
From your call to repaired
We repair electric and induction cooking appliances in your home, but we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance. During a visit, we look at the electrical connections, test the heating elements in the oven and grill, and check the hob zones for continuity. We also inspect the control switches, thermostats and door catches to find the cause of the problem.

Call 01752 922765This usually indicates an earth leak within the appliance. The internal insulation inside the main oven heating element degrades over time, allowing electrical current to reach the outer casing. Your household consumer unit detects this fault and trips the circuit breaker to cut the power. The faulty element will need to be identified and replaced.
When a single solid plate fails, the issue is normally either a broken element inside the plate itself or a faulty energy regulator behind the control knob. We test the continuity of the hotplate and the output from the switch to determine which part has failed. We do not repair gas hobs.
An overheating oven is typically caused by a faulty thermostat. The thermostat is responsible for regulating the internal temperature by turning the heating element on and off. If the sensor fails, the element will continue to heat continuously. We can test the thermostat and fit a replacement to restore normal temperature control.
