Know the home, know the fault

In both permanent residences and holiday lets used by visiting tourists, built-in and combination microwaves see heavy use for quick meals and defrosting. A built-in unit is integrated into the kitchen cabinetry, meaning a failure requires an in-home repair rather than simply replacing a freestanding model on the worktop. When a combination microwave stops heating food but still sounds as though it is running, the magnetron or high-voltage diode has usually failed. Turntables that refuse to rotate might have a burnt-out synchronous motor beneath the cavity floor, or the glass tray may simply be misaligned on its roller ring. Door latches and microswitches are another point of failure; if the hooks do not engage the switches correctly when the door closes, the appliance will not start. Control panels and digital displays can also become unresponsive, leaving the cooking functions completely inaccessible. We repair appliances in customers' homes. During a visit, we look at built-in and combination models that will not heat, turntables that will not turn, and faulty door switches or controls. We also cover nearby towns such as Newton Abbot, Kingsteignton, Torquay and Chudleigh for domestic electric appliance repairs, including washing machines, tumble dryers and ovens, though we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

A microwave that sounds normal but leaves food cold usually has a fault in its high-voltage circuit. The magnetron, which generates the microwaves, or the high-voltage diode may have failed. We test these internal components during a visit to find out why the appliance is not heating.

Turntables rely on a small synchronous motor located under the floor of the microwave cavity. If the glass tray is seated correctly on its roller ring and the drive coupling is intact, the motor itself has likely burnt out. We look at turntable faults in built-in and combination models in your home.

The door relies on a series of safety microswitches to tell the control board it is safely closed. If the door hooks are broken, the latch mechanism is worn, or a switch has failed, the microwave will not operate. We inspect door latches and switch faults on built-in units to resolve this issue.
