Know the home, know the fault
The housing across this part of the Devon coast ranges from large Italianate villas built by wealthy Victorians to private high-rise flats constructed above the harbour cliffs after the Second World War. Because the modern urban area grew by merging several smaller historical settlements, kitchens vary greatly in size and layout. Extractor hoods in older, high-ceilinged properties might be mounted further from the hob, requiring the motor to work harder to clear steam and cooking odours. In contrast, modern apartments often rely on recirculating hoods rather than external vents, making the condition of the internal components vital for keeping the kitchen environment comfortable. When an extractor loses suction, the issue is sometimes as straightforward as saturated grease filters restricting the airflow. However, if the fan will not run at all, the fault usually lies within the control switch, the printed circuit board, or the motor itself. Motors can also become noisy or start vibrating heavily, which points to worn bearings or a damaged impeller fan that has lost its balance. Lighting failures are another reason to look at the appliance. While a blown bulb is a simple fix, if replacement lamps do not work, the internal wiring, the light switch contacts, or the transformer might have failed. We repair appliances in customers' homes, looking at fans that will not run or have lost suction, noisy or vibrating motors, and lights or switches that have failed. Please note that our cooking appliance repairs are for electric and induction units only, so we do not work on gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765A vibrating noise usually means the motor or the impeller fan is unbalanced. Over time, grease build-up can cause the plastic fan blades to become heavy on one side, or a blade might snap off entirely. Worn motor bearings will also cause a loud rumbling sound when the extractor is running.
If changing the bulbs does not resolve the issue, the fault is likely within the internal electrical components. The light switch contacts can wear out from repeated use, or the wiring loom might have degraded. On many models, a failed internal transformer will stop power from reaching the light fittings.
Poor suction is frequently caused by blocked grease or carbon filters restricting the airflow through the canopy. If the filters are clean, the motor might be failing to reach its full speed, or there could be an obstruction in the external ducting preventing the stale air from being pushed outside.
