Know the home, know the fault

The housing in this part of the Tamar Valley grew rapidly during the nineteenth century due to a boom in mining and industrial activity. Today, the area is largely residential, set within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, alongside a small handful of businesses like pubs and small shops. In these older properties, kitchens can sometimes be compact, making a freestanding electric cooker a practical choice. These appliances combine an oven, grill and hob into a single unit, fitting neatly into spaces where built-in cooking appliances might be difficult to accommodate. When a freestanding cooker develops a fault, it can affect just one function or the entire appliance. A hob ring or zone failing to heat up is a typical issue, usually caused by a faulty element or a degraded control switch. If the main oven or grill stops heating but the fan or indicator lights still work, the heating element has likely failed. Cookers that trip the household electrics present another issue, which happens when moisture gets into an element or when internal wiring degrades. Door hinges and seals also wear down over time, letting heat escape and causing uneven cooking temperatures. During a visit, we look at oven and grill heating faults, hob rings that are not working, and issues with controls, switches or doors. We only repair electric and induction cooking appliances, so we do not work on gas cookers or gas hobs. We also travel to surrounding towns including Callington, Tavistock and Bere Alston.

This usually happens when an electrical component develops a fault to earth. The most likely culprit is a split or degraded heating element in the oven, grill or hob. Moisture inside the element casing can also cause a short circuit. We trace the electrical path to find the exact component causing the trip.

A solid hotplate failing to heat is generally due to a break in the internal heating ring or a faulty control switch. If the switch feels loose or does not click into position, the contacts behind the dial may have burned out. Both the hotplate and the switch can be tested and replaced.

Slow heating in an electric oven points to a failing element or a faulty thermostat. If the element is damaged, it might only produce a fraction of its normal heat. Alternatively, a worn door seal allows hot air to escape, meaning the cooker has to work much harder to reach the set temperature.
