Know the home, know the fault
The village grew rapidly during the nineteenth-century mining and industrial boom. Today, the settlement is mostly residential with a small handful of businesses, pubs, garages and shops, sitting within the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In older properties built during the industrial expansion, kitchens can sometimes be short on floor space. This means upright freezers are sometimes tucked into tight corners, while chest freezers might be kept in outbuildings. Wherever the appliance is located, poor ventilation around the cabinet can force the compressor to work harder to dissipate heat, leading to internal temperature problems. When a freezer is not cold enough, the compressor might run constantly to try and reach the set temperature. This continuous running can trigger temperature alarms. Heavy ice build-up is another issue that affects both chest and upright models. Solid ice restricts airflow inside the cabinet and causes plastic drawers to stick or crack when pulled. Icing up is sometimes caused by a split or degraded door seal, which lets warm room air seep inside where it condenses and freezes. A faulty defrost heater or a failed thermostat will also allow frost to accumulate rapidly on the evaporator coils. During a visit, we look at why the appliance is not freezing or icing up. Testing involves checking the integrity of the door seals, examining the compressor and condenser coils, and assessing the defrost system components. Please note that while we repair a wide range of electric kitchen equipment, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765Thick ice inside an upright freezer usually points to a problem with the defrost system or a damaged door seal. If the seal is split, warm air enters the cabinet and freezes on the interior walls. Alternatively, a failed defrost heater or timer will stop the appliance from melting away normal frost during its cycle.
A freezer compressor will run continuously if the appliance is struggling to reach its target temperature. This can happen if the condenser coils are covered in thick dust, restricting heat transfer. It might also be caused by a faulty thermostat failing to signal that the correct temperature has been reached, or a partial refrigerant leak.
The temperature alarm sounds when the internal cabinet becomes too warm to store food safely. This rise in temperature could be due to a blocked air vent, a failing compressor, or heavy ice build-up restricting cold air circulation. We test the cooling components to find out exactly why the appliance is losing its chill.
