Know the home, know the fault

The area remains mainly residential today, sitting within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In older homes, kitchen space can dictate appliance choices, leading households to opt for built-in or combination microwaves to save worktop room. Because these units are integrated directly into the cabinetry, a breakdown requires an in-home repair rather than simply unplugging the machine and taking it to a local shop. Combination models handle both standard microwaving and convection cooking, which adds complexity to their internal components. A unit might appear to run normally, with the internal light on and the cooling fan whirring, but completely fail to heat the food. This points to a fault in the high-voltage circuit, such as a failed magnetron, capacitor, or diode. Turntables that refuse to rotate usually suffer from a burnt-out synchronous motor located beneath the cavity floor. Door latches and microswitches are another area of failure. If the interlocking switches do not register the door as securely closed, the main control board will prevent the appliance from operating at all. When visiting addresses near King George's Field or the surrounding residential streets, we assess the appliance in place. We look at built-in and combination models that will not heat or turn, checking door switches, control displays, and turntable mechanisms. While we repair electric cooking appliances like induction hobs and electric ovens, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs, or any gas appliance.

When a microwave sounds like it is working but the food remains cold, the issue is usually within the high-voltage components. The magnetron, which generates the microwave energy, may have failed. Alternatively, a faulty high-voltage diode or capacitor can prevent the magnetron from receiving the power it needs to operate.

A turntable that will not turn is generally caused by a faulty synchronous motor located under the floor of the microwave cavity. If the motor receives power but does not move, it needs replacing. Sometimes, a broken drive coupling or a jammed roller ring can also stop the glass plate from rotating.

A completely unresponsive microwave with no lights or display usually indicates a power issue. The internal main fuse might have blown due to a fault in a door microswitch. If the door switches fail to engage in the correct sequence, the fuse blows to cut power and prevent the appliance from operating.
