Know the home, know the fault

Residential properties in this Tamar Valley settlement largely date back to a nineteenth-century boom in mining and industrial activity. Houses built during that era were not designed with modern domestic appliances in mind, meaning a freestanding or integrated fridge is sometimes fitted into a compact space or an unheated utility area. When a refrigeration unit is pushed tightly against a wall in a smaller kitchen, the compressor and condenser coils at the back struggle to release heat. This lack of airflow forces the motor to run longer to maintain the correct internal temperature, which puts extra strain on the cooling system. A fridge running constantly is a sign that the appliance is struggling to cool. This might be due to a faulty thermostat failing to signal when the target temperature is reached, or a degraded door seal letting warm room air seep inside. When warm air enters, moisture condenses and freezes on the back wall. If the defrost drain hole gets blocked by food debris, that condensation has nowhere to go, leading to water pooling under the salad crisper drawers or leaking onto the floor. You might also hear clicking noises if the compressor relay is failing to start the motor, or notice the interior cooling unevenly. Whether your property is near Kit Hill or closer to the local shops, we repair appliances directly in your home. During a visit, we look at fridges that are too warm, too cold, noisy or leaking. We inspect units for water pooling inside, ice building up on the back wall, and constant running or new noises. Our fault finding covers faulty lights, thermostats and door seals to get the appliance cooling evenly again. We also fix washing machines, electric ovens and dishwashers, though we do not work on gas appliances.

Water pooling under the salad drawers happens when the defrost drain hole becomes blocked. Condensation forms on the back wall during normal operation and is supposed to run down into this drain. If crumbs or food packaging block the hole, the water overflows into the base of the fridge.

A repetitive clicking sound from the back of a fridge points to a faulty compressor start relay. The relay attempts to send power to the motor to begin the cooling cycle, but if it fails, it clicks and shuts off. This leaves the appliance unable to cool your food.

Ice builds up when warm air enters the cabinet and condenses. This happens when a split or flattened door seal no longer closes tightly against the frame. It can also occur if the internal thermostat is faulty, causing the compressor to run continuously and freeze the natural moisture inside.
