Know the home, know the fault

Properties near the high ground of Dartmoor by the River Tavy range from mid-nineteenth-century miners' houses to newer builds for commuters working in Plymouth. The area also has a recognisable Bedford style of architecture. In these varied homes, freestanding electric cookers are relied upon by a sizeable retired population and those providing accommodation for the West Devon tourist trade. A freestanding cooker combines an oven, a grill and a hob in a single unit, meaning a failure can disrupt meal preparation entirely. When an electric cooker stops working as it should, the issue might be isolated to one section or affect the whole appliance. If the oven or grill is not heating, the element has usually failed, though a faulty thermostat or selector switch can also prevent the temperature from rising. On the top section, hob rings or zones that do not heat up point to a broken element or a damaged energy regulator behind the control knob. Cookers that trip the electrics when switched on are typically suffering from an earth leak, which happens when the internal insulation inside a heating element breaks down. Door faults, such as broken hinges or worn seals, allow heat to escape and increase cooking times. We travel out to addresses near Whitchurch Down and the surrounding agricultural community to repair freestanding electric cookers in customers' homes. During a visit, we look at oven and grill heating faults, hob rings or zones not heating, cookers that trip the electrics, as well as controls, switches and door faults. Please note that our cooking appliance repairs are electric and induction only, so we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

This happens when an electrical component develops an earth leak. The most likely cause is a split or degraded oven heating element, which allows moisture to penetrate the internal wiring. A faulty selector switch or damaged wiring block at the back of the cooker can also cause the electrics to trip.

A solid hotplate will stop heating if the internal element track breaks. If the ring stays completely cold, the energy regulator behind the control knob might have failed, preventing power from reaching the hob zone. We can test the hotplate and the switch to find out which part has broken.

Yes, we look at door faults on freestanding electric cookers. A door that hangs loose or fails to shut properly is usually caused by worn or snapped hinges. The hinge receivers inside the cooker frame can also bend over time. Replacing the hinges and receivers will restore the door alignment.
