Know the home, know the fault

This ancient wool settlement sits in the Teign Valley close to the edge of Dartmoor. Homes near Haldon Forest or towards Bovey Tracey might rely on freestanding electric cookers, particularly in kitchens where the layout is dictated by older floor plans. A freestanding cooker houses the oven, grill and hob in one unit, meaning a single appliance handles all the daily cooking tasks.

Why electric cookers go wrong

What we look for

When a freestanding electric cooker develops a fault, it can affect just one function or the whole unit. If a hob ring or zone stops heating, the issue is usually a failed solid plate element or a faulty energy regulator switch. Oven and grill heating faults are similar, where the main fan element or the grill element burns out, leaving the appliance blowing cold air or failing to reach the required temperature. Sometimes, a cooker will trip the electrics as soon as it is turned on. This happens when the insulation inside a heating element breaks down, allowing electrical current to leak to earth. Door faults, such as worn hinges or torn seals, let heat escape, forcing the oven to work harder to maintain temperature.

When we visit

From your call to repaired

We repair electric cookers in customers' homes across the area, from properties near Castle Dyke to the surrounding villages like Chudleigh Knighton. During a visit, we look at the specific fault reported, whether that is a broken selector switch, a thermostat that is not regulating heat, or a main oven door that will not close properly. We test the internal components to find the cause of the heating failure or electrical trip. We only work on electric and induction cooking appliances, so we do not repair gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

A cooker usually trips the electrics because a heating element has failed. Over time, the internal insulation inside an oven, grill or hob element breaks down. When the appliance is switched on, electrical current leaks to the earth casing, which causes the household circuit breaker or RCD to trip.

If the fan is running but there is no heat, the fan element has likely burned out. The element is a circular metal tube located behind the back panel of the oven cavity. When the internal wire breaks, it stops producing heat, leaving the fan to circulate cold air.

This happens when the energy regulator switch behind the control knob fails. The switch is designed to cycle the power on and off to maintain the heat level you select. If the internal contacts fuse together, the switch sends continuous power to the hob ring, keeping it on maximum heat.
