Know the home, know the fault
The housing stock in Launceston includes Georgian houses alongside rural farm buildings that support the agricultural economy. Holiday accommodation is also present, catering to visitors drawn to the castle and the heritage railway. In agricultural households, freestanding electric cookers work hard preparing meals, while holiday rentals see varied use from different guests. Whether a cooker sits in an older property on the steep slopes rising from the River Kensey or a modern kitchen, heavy use takes a toll on the heating elements and controls.
Why electric cookers go wrong
What we look for
A freestanding electric cooker houses multiple components that degrade over time. When an oven or grill stops heating, a heating element has failed, snapping internally and breaking the electrical circuit. Hob rings or zones that refuse to warm up might suffer from a faulty energy regulator or a burnt-out hotplate connection. Switches and control knobs take constant physical wear, leading to loose contacts that prevent the appliance from turning on. Door faults, such as worn hinges or torn seals, let heat escape, forcing the thermostat to keep the elements running longer than necessary to maintain the set temperature. Sometimes, a degraded component will short to earth, which trips the household electrics the moment the cooker is switched on.

When we visit
From your call to repaired
Travelling out from our base in Plymouth, we repair domestic appliances across the area, including places like Tregadillett. If the cooker trips the electrics, we test the oven elements, grill elements and hob zones to find the short circuit. We check the wiring block at the back for loose connections and inspect the selector switches for heat damage. Please note that we only work on electric and induction cooking appliances, so we do not repair gas cookers or gas hobs.

Electric Cookers in Launceston: your questions

Call 01752 922765A cooker will trip the electrics if a component shorts to earth. This happens when the internal insulation of an oven element, grill element or hob ring breaks down. Moisture from cooking or cleaning can also reach the electrical connections. We test the individual heating zones and switches to locate the exact short circuit.
If the fan runs and the indicator light comes on but there is no heat, the fan oven element has failed. The element wire degrades with use and eventually snaps, breaking the circuit. If the appliance is completely dead, the issue might be a burnt connection at the main terminal block or a faulty selector switch.
Solid hotplates rely on an internal heating coil and an energy regulator behind the control knob. If a single plate fails to heat, the coil inside the hotplate has burnt out or the regulator is no longer sending power to it. We inspect the hob wiring and test the regulators to find the broken connection.
