Homes in Brixham

Know the home, know the fault

Properties in Brixham range from small terraced cottages built during or before the nineteenth century near the harbour, to residential housing further inland dating from the nineteen thirties to the nineteen seventies. Older terraces generally have smaller kitchens, meaning an upright freezer might be squeezed into a tight corner, while larger homes might have room for a chest freezer. Wherever a freezer is kept, it needs adequate airflow around the condenser coils at the back or underneath to dissipate heat effectively. When airflow is restricted, the compressor has to run constantly to maintain the correct internal temperature. This constant running can lead to the appliance not being cold enough and trigger temperature alarms. Another issue is heavy ice build-up, which causes drawers to stick and reduces storage space. This icing up is sometimes caused by a faulty door seal letting warm room air into the cabinet, where it condenses and freezes. If the seal is intact, the defrost heater, thermostat or timer might have failed, leaving the evaporator coils blocked with frost and preventing cold air from circulating. We travel out to repair freezers across the area, including places like Higher Brixham. During a visit, we look at upright and chest freezers that are not freezing properly or are icing up. We check for door seal faults, test the defrost components, and inspect the compressor and thermostat. As a domestic appliance repair business, we also fix washing machines, electric ovens and dishwashers, but we do not work on gas appliances.

Constant running indicates the freezer is struggling to maintain its internal temperature. This happens if the door seal is split, letting warm air inside, or if the condenser coils at the back are covered in dust. A failing thermostat can also cause the compressor to run without stopping. We can inspect the appliance and fit replacement parts if required.

Heavy ice build-up occurs when moisture enters the cabinet and freezes. A damaged door seal will cause this, as it allows humid room air to seep in. In frost-free models, the defrost heater, timer, or sensor might have failed, preventing the appliance from clearing frost away automatically. We test these components during a repair visit.

A temperature alarm sounds when the interior gets too warm. This can be triggered by a door left slightly open, a buildup of ice blocking the internal air vents, or a failing compressor. If the appliance is not cold enough, food will begin to thaw. We check the cooling system and the door seals to resolve temperature faults.
