Know the home, know the fault
This seaside town on the coast of Tor Bay grew from a small fishing village after a new harbour was built in 1847. The historic parts of the settlement, including Church Street, Winner Street and Palace Avenue, contain fine examples of Victorian architecture. Because the local economy relies extensively on tourism and family holidays, there is a wide variety of holiday accommodation alongside permanent residences. As the population increased, the town merged with the villages of Goodrington and Preston. In both Victorian properties and modern holiday lets, freezers are relied upon for long-term food storage. Upright models are usually kept in the main kitchen, while chest freezers might be placed in utility spaces. When a freezer is not freezing properly or is icing up, it compromises food preservation. Heavy ice build-up can cause drawers to stick and significantly reduce the available space inside the cabinet. This icing is sometimes caused by door seal faults, which allow warm room air to enter and condense on the cold surfaces. If the appliance is not cold enough, temperature alarms will sound and the compressor motor may run constantly as it struggles to lower the internal temperature. Frost-free models rely on a defrost heater and timer system, and a failure in these components leads to ice blocking the internal air circulation channels. When visiting properties in places like the Hookhills estate, we look at upright and chest freezers that are not cold enough or have heavy ice build-up. We check the appliance for drawers that stick, temperature alarms, constant running and door seal faults. Alongside refrigeration equipment, we fix washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and electric ovens, but we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765Thick ice builds up when warm air enters the freezer cabinet. This happens if the door seal is split or if the door is left slightly open. In frost-free models, a failure in the defrost heater or timer prevents the appliance from clearing condensation, leading to heavy ice build-up that can make drawers stick.
A freezer runs constantly when it struggles to reach its set temperature. This occurs if the thermostat is faulty and cannot detect how cold the cabinet is. It also happens if the condenser coils are covered in dust, or if a damaged door seal is letting cold air escape into the room.
A temperature alarm sounds to warn you that the internal cabinet is not cold enough to keep food frozen safely. This is triggered by a sudden loss of cooling, which might be caused by a failing compressor, a broken thermostat, or a heavy ice build-up blocking the cold air circulation.
