Homes in Brixham

Know the home, know the fault

Properties in Brixham range from small terraced cottages built during or before the nineteenth century near the harbour, to mid-twentieth-century housing further inland. Kitchen layouts vary considerably across these different eras of building. In older, narrower properties, worktop space is at a premium, making built-in or combination microwaves a practical choice to save room. Modern developments might feature these appliances integrated into fitted cabinets at eye level, combining standard microwave functions with a grill or convection oven. When a built-in or combination microwave develops a fault, it disrupts daily meal preparation. A microwave might appear to run normally, with the interior light on and the timer counting down, but fail to heat the food at all. This indicates a component failure in the high-voltage circuit, such as a diode or capacitor. Turntables that will not turn result in unevenly heated meals, pointing to an issue with the synchronous motor located beneath the cavity. Door latches and switches are also critical safety features. If the interlock switches fail to register that the door is securely closed, the appliance will not start. Control panels and digital displays can also become unresponsive over time. We repair built-in and combination microwaves in your home. During a visit, we look at microwaves that run but do not heat, turntables that will not turn, door latch and switch faults, and unresponsive controls and displays. We work on electric cooking appliances only and do not repair gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

When a microwave runs, counts down, and turns the plate but produces no heat, there is a fault in the high-voltage circuit. This involves components like the magnetron, high-voltage diode, or capacitor. These parts generate the microwave energy required for heating, and a failure in any of them stops the cooking process.

A turntable that will not turn is usually caused by a faulty synchronous motor located under the floor of the microwave cavity. It can also be due to a broken glass tray drive coupling or a damaged roller ring. Without rotation, food will heat unevenly, leaving cold spots in your meals.

If the controls respond but the microwave will not start, the door interlock switches might be at fault. These switches are a safety feature designed to prevent the appliance from running while the door is open. If a switch or the door latch mechanism fails, the microwave remains disabled.
