Know the home, know the fault

The coastal town of Brixham has a mix of housing, from small terraced cottages built during the nineteenth century or earlier along the narrow streets near the harbour, to properties dating from the nineteen thirties to the nineteen seventies further inland. Older terraces often have compact kitchens where a fridge might be tucked into a tight alcove, restricting airflow around the condenser coils at the back. In mid-twentieth-century houses, larger kitchens might accommodate freestanding models, but any fridge needs adequate ventilation to dissipate heat efficiently. When a fridge cannot vent properly, the compressor has to work harder to maintain the internal temperature. This extra strain can lead to constant running or clicking noises as the start relay struggles to engage. Another issue is water pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor, which usually happens when the defrost drain hole gets blocked by food debris. If the appliance is too warm or not cooling evenly, the thermostat might be failing to read the temperature correctly, or the door seals could be split, letting warm room air enter and causing ice to build up on the back wall. During a visit, we look at fridges that are warm, too cold, noisy or leaking. We check for faulty lights, test thermostats, inspect door seals for gaps, and clear blocked drains causing water to pool. We also work on washing machines, dishwashers, electric ovens and other domestic appliances, though we do not repair gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas equipment.

Water pooling under the salad crisper drawers usually points to a blocked defrost drain. Fridges produce condensation that runs down the back wall into a small hole. If crumbs or packaging block this drain, the water overflows into the cabinet. Clearing the blockage allows the water to drain away into the evaporation tray above the compressor.

A fridge that runs constantly is struggling to reach its set temperature. This can happen if the condenser coils are covered in dust, restricting airflow, or if the door seals are damaged and letting warm air inside. Clicking or buzzing noises alongside constant running can indicate a failing start relay or a compressor working under excessive strain.

Ice builds up when warm air enters the fridge and condenses on the cold back wall. This is frequently caused by a torn or flattened door seal failing to keep the cold air inside. A faulty thermostat can also cause the compressor to run for too long, freezing the condensation before it has a chance to drain away.
