Know the home, know the fault
The coastal town of Brixham has a mix of housing, from small terraced cottages built during or before the nineteenth century near the harbour, to properties dating from the nineteen thirties to the nineteen seventies further inland. In older terraces, kitchen space can be tight, meaning fridge freezers are sometimes pushed hard against walls. Without enough airflow around the condenser coils at the back, the compressor has to work harder to remove heat. In more spacious homes, larger American-style models or integrated units hidden behind cabinet doors are an option, though built-in models still require proper ventilation. When a fridge freezer develops a fault, it is usually related to temperature control or defrosting issues. A situation where the freezer remains frozen but the fridge section becomes warm points to a failure in the frost-free system. If the defrost heater or sensor stops working, ice builds up over the evaporator coils and blocks the fan from blowing cold air into the fridge. Water pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor is typically caused by a blocked defrost drain hole. Noisy running can indicate a failing fan motor struggling against ice, or a worn compressor. Faulty control boards can also cause the appliance to over-freeze items or fail to cool. When we visit a home in an area like Cowtown, we check the appliance in its setting. For a fridge freezer repair, we look at frost and ice build-up, test the defrost heaters, and clear blocked drainage channels. We check the compressor and fans for noisy running, and examine the electronic controls. Whether it is a freestanding unit leaking water onto the floor, an integrated model running warm, or a large American-style appliance, we dismantle the necessary sections to test the internal components.

Call 01752 922765This happens when the defrost drain hole at the back of the fridge becomes blocked with food debris or packaging. Condensation that normally runs down the back wall and into the drain ends up pooling under the salad crisper drawers. We clear the blockage and flush the drain tube to allow water to escape.
Thick ice in a frost-free model usually means the automatic defrost cycle has failed. The defrost heater, the defrost timer, or a thermal fuse might have stopped working. When this happens, ice coats the evaporator coils and eventually stops the fan from circulating cold air. We test these specific components during a visit.
A loud buzzing or vibrating noise is usually caused by the compressor struggling, or by a fan motor hitting a build-up of ice. In integrated models, the noise can sometimes be amplified by the wooden cabinet doors. We inspect the compressor mountings and the internal fans to identify the source.
