Know the home, know the fault

The residential properties across Torquay vary from large Italianate villas built by wealthy nineteenth-century residents to private post-war high-rise flats overlooking the harbour. Because the modern urban area grew by merging several smaller historical settlements, kitchens come in many different shapes and sizes. A chest freezer might sit in an outbuilding or utility space of an older property, while upright models are usually integrated into the fitted kitchens of modern apartments. Wherever a freezer is located, it needs adequate ventilation around the condenser coils to dissipate heat, otherwise the compressor has to work harder to maintain the internal temperature. When a freezer is not cold enough, the issue might be a failing thermostat or a faulty compressor relay. Heavy ice build-up is another issue that stops drawers from sliding properly and reduces storage space. This icing up happens when warm air enters the cabinet, which points to a damaged or degraded door seal. If the door seal is intact, a defrost heater or timer failure in a frost-free model will also cause ice to accumulate over the evaporator coils, blocking airflow. Temperature alarms sounding and constant running of the motor indicate the appliance is struggling to reach its set temperature. During a visit, we look at upright and chest freezers that are not freezing or are icing up. We check for faults causing heavy ice build-up and drawers that stick, investigate temperature alarms and constant running, and inspect door seal faults. We also repair washing machines, dishwashers, and electric cooking appliances, but we do not work on gas cookers or any gas appliance.

A frost-free freezer uses a heater to melt ice off the evaporator coils. If the defrost heater, the defrost timer, or the thermostat fails, ice will accumulate inside the cabinet. This blocks the air vents, preventing cold air from circulating properly. A degraded door seal also lets in warm air, which turns into excess frost.

The alarm sounds when the internal temperature rises above a safe freezing level. This can happen if the compressor is failing or if there is a leak in the sealed refrigerant system. It might also be caused by a thick layer of ice insulating the cooling coils, or a faulty sensor sending incorrect temperature readings to the control board.

If the compressor motor is running continuously but the cabinet is not getting cold, the appliance is likely low on refrigerant gas due to a leak. Another possibility is a weak compressor that can no longer pump the gas efficiently. Blocked condenser coils can also prevent the appliance from dissipating heat, stopping the cooling process entirely.
