Know the home, know the fault
Situated in east Cornwall between Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor, Callington historically served as a market centre for the surrounding agricultural community. During the nineteenth century, the settlement grew into a highly significant mining centre. Today, domestic kitchens and utility spaces vary greatly in size. Older properties generally have different layouts to newer builds, meaning a large chest freezer might be kept in an unheated garage or outbuilding, while a standard upright model is usually kept indoors. Wherever the appliance is located, the surrounding room temperature affects how hard the compressor has to work to maintain a freezing environment. When a freezer stops maintaining the correct internal climate, a continuous temperature alarm might sound, or the motor may run constantly without ever cycling off. Heavy ice build-up is another issue that develops over time, which eventually causes plastic drawers to stick or crack when pulled. This excessive icing is sometimes caused by a split or degraded magnetic door seal letting warm room air into the cabinet. Alternatively, the internal defrost heater or the defrost timer might have failed. When these components break down, solid frost is allowed to choke the evaporator coils, completely blocking the circulation of cold air. During a visit, we look at upright and chest freezers that are not cold enough or are icing up. We investigate the mechanical and electrical causes behind temperature alarms, constant running, and door seal faults. As a domestic appliance repair service, All Appliance Care carries out all work directly in your home. Alongside refrigeration equipment, we fix washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, and electric cookers, though we do not work on gas appliances.

Call 01752 922765Thick ice build-up is usually caused by warm air entering the cabinet or a failure in the automatic defrost system. A split door seal allows humid room air inside, which freezes on the interior walls. Alternatively, a broken defrost heater or timer will stop the appliance from clearing its own frost, leading to heavy icing.
A sounding alarm indicates that the internal temperature has risen above a safe freezing level. This happens if the door has been left open, but it also points to mechanical faults. A failing compressor, a blocked capillary tube, or a broken thermostat can all prevent the appliance from staying cold enough.
The motor runs continuously when the appliance struggles to reach its target temperature. This happens if the condenser coils are covered in thick dust, restricting heat transfer, or if there is a partial loss of refrigerant gas. A faulty thermostat might also fail to signal the compressor to switch off.
