Know the home, know the fault
The housing stock in Newton Abbot along the River Teign includes terraced streets originally built for railway workers during the Victorian expansion of the locomotive works, alongside larger villas. Further out, newer developments at Hele Park and Wolborough Barton are adding thousands of modern homes. In older terraces, kitchen space can be tight, meaning upright freezers are sometimes squeezed into narrow gaps or under counters where ventilation is poor. Modern properties might have more room for larger chest freezers in utility areas. When a freezer lacks adequate airflow around the condenser coils at the back, the compressor has to work harder to dissipate heat, which can lead to cooling problems. When a freezer struggles to maintain temperature, heavy ice build-up occurs if warm air enters the cabinet. This happens when a door seal has split or lost its magnetism. The moisture in the room air freezes on the evaporator coils, restricting internal airflow and causing drawers to stick. If the appliance is running constantly or triggering a temperature alarm, the thermostat might be failing to signal the compressor to switch off, or the start relay could be faulty. A freezer that is completely silent and not freezing at all might have a broken compressor or a failed main control board. During a visit, we look at upright and chest freezers that are not cold enough or are icing up. We check for door seal faults, investigate heavy ice build-up that causes drawers to stick, and diagnose temperature alarms or constant running. We fix washing machines, dishwashers, and electric ovens, but we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs, or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765Thick ice usually forms when warm air gets inside the freezer compartment. This happens if the door seal is torn or if the door has been left slightly open. The moisture in the air freezes against the cold walls and evaporator coils. Over time, this ice restricts airflow and causes the drawers to stick.
A temperature alarm sounds when the internal cabinet gets too warm. This can be caused by a failing compressor, a faulty thermostat, or a broken start relay. It also happens if the condenser coils are blocked by dust, preventing the appliance from releasing heat effectively and causing the temperature to rise.
A freezer runs constantly when it struggles to reach its target temperature. A degraded door seal letting in room air is a known cause. Alternatively, the thermostat might be faulty, failing to tell the control board that the correct temperature has been reached, which forces the compressor to keep running.
