Know the home, know the fault

Recorded in the Domesday Book, Bodmin is one of the oldest settlements in Cornwall, and local housing spans many centuries. The parish area is largely urbanised, with a mix of historic properties and modern developments. In neighbourhoods experiencing higher levels of deprivation, households rely heavily on their appliances to preserve food and manage budgets. Meanwhile, the new college campus built near the Asda supermarket brings students and staff to the area, creating demand for shared accommodation. In both family homes and student lets, a fridge freezer is a vital appliance. When it stops working, food spoils quickly. Integrated models are popular in fitted kitchens, while freestanding units are easier to move into older, tighter spaces. A fridge freezer can develop several faults that disrupt a household. A unit might have a working freezer while the fridge section becomes warm, or the reverse can happen. This is sometimes caused by a failing fan or a blocked defrost drain preventing cold air from circulating properly. Frost and solid ice build-up inside the freezer compartment usually points to a faulty defrost heater or a damaged door seal letting in room-temperature air. Water pooling under the salad crisper drawers or leaking onto the kitchen floor is another issue, often linked to a clogged drainage tube. Noisy running, such as loud buzzing or clicking, can indicate a struggling compressor, while faulty controls might stop the appliance from maintaining the correct temperature. We visit homes across the area, including neighbourhoods like Westheath, to repair domestic appliances. When looking at a fridge freezer, we check the compressor, thermostats, and defrost components to find the fault. Please note that we only repair electric appliances and do not work on gas cookers or any gas equipment.

Water collecting under the salad drawers is usually caused by a blocked defrost drain. During the automatic defrost cycle, condensation runs down the back wall and into a small drainage hole. If food debris or packaging blocks this hole, the water has nowhere to go and spills into the fridge.

This happens when cold air cannot circulate from the freezer into the fridge section. It is sometimes caused by a broken evaporator fan that fails to push the air upwards. Alternatively, a faulty defrost system might allow solid ice to build up, physically blocking the air vents between the compartments.

A frost-free freezer should melt away ice automatically using a defrost heater and a timer. If either of these components fails, ice will accumulate rapidly on the evaporator coils. A torn or split door seal can also cause this by allowing warm, moist room air to enter and freeze inside.
