Know the home, know the fault

As Bodmin is one of the oldest settlements in Cornwall, the housing stock across the urban parish area varies significantly. From historic properties to neighbourhoods experiencing higher levels of deprivation, kitchens come in all shapes and sizes. A large electric range cooker takes up substantial space and requires a dedicated, high-capacity electrical circuit. Multiple people cooking at different times puts continuous strain on the oven elements, door hinges and control dials. When an electric range cooker develops a fault, the issue is typically isolated to a specific compartment. A main or secondary oven that stops heating while the indicator light remains on points to a failed heating element. If the appliance trips the household electrics the moment a particular function is selected, a degraded element or a wiring fault within that specific zone is the cause. On the top section, solid plate or ceramic hob zones can fail to reach temperature or become stuck on maximum heat, which indicates a faulty energy regulator behind the control knob. Fan motors also seize or burn out, preventing hot air from circulating and leading to uneven baking. We only work on electric and induction models, so we do not repair gas hobs or gas ovens. When inspecting an electric range cooker, we look at the main and secondary ovens, testing the fan motors, thermostats and heating elements. We also check the grill and hob sections to trace the source of any heating issues or electrical tripping. If a control dial is unresponsive or a cooling fan is noisy, we dismantle the necessary panels to test the internal components directly.

This happens when an electrical component develops a fault and shorts to earth. In an electric range cooker, the most likely culprit is a degraded heating element in the main oven, secondary oven or grill. We test the internal wiring and each individual element to find exactly which part is causing the electrical system to trip.

If the fan is spinning and the thermostat light comes on but there is no heat, the fan oven element has likely failed. The element surrounds the fan at the back of the cavity and degrades over time with normal cooking. We dismantle the rear interior panel to test and replace the faulty heating element.

Yes, we repair electric and induction hobs on range cookers. Induction zones can fail due to faulty generator boards, damaged user interface modules or issues with the cooling fans underneath the glass. We dismantle the top section to test the electronic components. We do not work on any gas hobs or gas range cookers.
