Know the home, know the fault

As one of the oldest settlements in Cornwall, the local parish is highly urbanised and closely matches the town boundaries. In busy kitchens, a built-in or combination microwave is heavily relied upon for preparing quick meals. Certain neighbourhoods experience significant levels of poverty and deprivation, meaning repairing an existing integrated appliance is a practical alternative to buying a replacement. When a combination microwave stops working, the issue might be a turntable that refuses to rotate, which leads to uneven cooking. This is sometimes caused by a failed synchronous motor beneath the cavity floor. Another fault is when the appliance runs, the light comes on and the timer counts down, but the food remains cold. This points to a failure in the heating components, such as the magnetron, high-voltage capacitor or diode. Door latch and switch faults will also prevent the unit from starting, as safety mechanisms stop the microwave from operating if the door is not securely closed. Control panels and digital displays can also fail, leaving the appliance unresponsive to inputs. During a visit, we look at built-in and combination microwaves that will not heat or turn. We carry out repairs on appliances in your home, diagnosing issues with turntables that will not turn, microwaves that run but do not heat, and faulty controls or displays. We also inspect door latch and switch faults. We only repair electric cooking appliances and do not work on gas cookers or gas hobs.

This happens when the high-voltage components that generate the cooking energy fail. The magnetron, capacitor or diode might have stopped working. The appliance will still sound like it is running because the cooling fan and turntable motor operate on separate circuits, but no heat is produced inside the cavity.

A turntable that will not turn is usually caused by a broken synchronous motor located under the floor of the microwave. It can also happen if the glass tray is not seated correctly on the rotating ring, or if the plastic drive coupling has snapped and needs replacing.

An unresponsive control panel points to a fault with the main circuit board or the membrane switch behind the buttons. If the display is also blank, a blown internal fuse or a faulty door switch might be preventing power from reaching the controls. We look at controls and displays during our visits.
