Know the home, know the fault

As one of the oldest towns in Cornwall, this ancient settlement has a highly urbanised parish area that closely matches the town boundaries. Housing ranges from historic properties to homes accommodating older students attending the new college campus near the local supermarket. Households managing tight budgets, particularly in neighbourhoods experiencing significant levels of poverty, rely heavily on their laundry appliances to keep daily life running. Student households also generate large volumes of washing, which puts sustained mechanical strain on the machine over time. Heavy use leads to predictable wear and tear inside the cabinet. Constant washing cycles can cause door locks to fail, leaving doors that will not open or close at the end of a programme. A machine that will not drain is sometimes caused by a failing drain pump or debris caught in the filter. Leaks from seals, hoses and the pump area can damage flooring if left unresolved. Noisy drums and excessive vibration on spin might point to worn drum bearings or degraded suspension dampers. Machines that trip the electrics or show error codes require electrical fault finding, which involves checking components like the heating element, motor brushes or the main control board. Our domestic appliance repair business is based in Plymouth. We travel to homes across the town, including areas like Westheath, to diagnose and repair washing machines in your home. We look at machines that will not drain, spin, fill or start, checking everything from the water inlet valves to the motor. While we repair a wide range of kitchen equipment, including electric ovens, tumble dryers and induction hobs, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Excessive vibration on spin is usually caused by an unbalanced load, but mechanical faults can also be the reason. The suspension dampers that absorb movement can degrade, or the concrete counterweights might become loose. If the drum is also very noisy, the main drum bearings may have failed and require replacement.

A machine that trips the electrics usually has an earth leak or a short circuit. This happens when water reaches an electrical component, or when a part like the heating element or motor breaks down internally. We use a multimeter to test the internal components and locate the exact electrical fault.

Leaks from the front of the machine are typically caused by a damaged door seal. The rubber gasket can tear if sharp objects are left in pockets, or it can degrade over time. Sometimes, the door hinges drop slightly, preventing the glass bowl from pressing firmly against the rubber seal.
