Know the home, know the fault
In households managing on a tight budget, which is a reality for several neighbourhoods here experiencing higher levels of deprivation, keeping food fresh is essential. A failing fridge leads to food waste, making a reliable appliance vital for daily life. When a fridge stops cooling evenly, the issue might stem from a faulty thermostat or a failing compressor. If the appliance feels too warm, the door seals could be degraded, letting cold air escape and forcing the motor to run constantly to compensate. Water pooling beneath the salad crisper drawers or leaking onto the floor usually points to a blocked defrost drain. Ice building up on the back wall can indicate a problem with the defrost heater or a temperature sensor. Clicking sounds or new, loud noises from the back often suggest the compressor relay is struggling to start the cooling cycle, while faulty interior lights can make it hard to see what is stored inside. During a home visit, we look at fridges that are too warm, too cold, noisy or leaking. We check for faulty lights, test thermostats, inspect door seals and clear blocked drains to stop water pooling. We work on electric appliances only, meaning we do not repair gas cookers or gas hobs, but we do fix washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, freezers and ovens.

Call 01752 922765Water pooling inside the cabinet, usually under the salad drawers, is typically caused by a blocked defrost drain. Condensation runs down the back wall and should exit through a small hole. If crumbs or food packaging block this drain, the water overflows into the fridge. Clearing the blockage allows the water to drain away properly.
A fridge motor runs constantly when it struggles to maintain the set temperature. This happens if the door seals are split, letting warm air enter the cabinet. It can also occur if the condenser coils at the back are covered in thick dust, or if the thermostat is faulty and fails to signal the compressor to switch off.
Ice building up on the back wall of a fridge suggests an issue with the automatic defrost system. The defrost heater or a temperature sensor might have failed, preventing the appliance from melting away normal frost. A damaged door seal can also let excessive moisture into the cabinet, which then freezes against the cold back panel.
