Know the home, know the fault
The civil parish is mostly urbanised, matching the town boundaries closely. In older properties with smaller kitchens, freestanding electric cookers remain a practical choice, combining a hob, grill and oven in a single unit. Some neighbourhoods experience higher levels of deprivation, meaning repairing an existing appliance is a sensible alternative to buying a replacement.
Why electric cookers go wrong
What we look for
A freestanding electric cooker works hard, and its components degrade with use. When an oven or grill stops heating, the fault usually lies with a blown element or a failed thermostat. If the main oven trips the electrics when turned on, the element has likely split, allowing the internal wire to earth against the outer casing. On the top section, solid hotplates or radiant rings can fail to heat up if the switch contacts burn out or the ring itself breaks down. Door hinges also weaken over time, preventing the oven from sealing properly and allowing heat to escape, which ruins baking results and wastes energy.

When we visit
From your call to repaired
When visiting a property on the Finn VC Estate or elsewhere in the area, we test the appliance to find the exact fault. We check the continuity of the heating elements, inspect the control switches for signs of burning, and examine the wiring block where the main cable connects to the cooker. Our service covers freestanding electric models, including their oven, grill and hob sections. We do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliances. If a cooker has a faulty selector switch or a broken door catch, we dismantle the fascia or door panels to access and replace the broken parts.

Call 01752 922765This usually happens when the main fan oven element or the grill element has split. Inside the metal casing of the element is a coiled wire surrounded by insulation powder. If the casing cracks, the live wire touches the metal, causing a short circuit that trips your consumer unit. The damaged element needs replacing.
A solid hotplate will stop working if the internal heating coil breaks down or if the energy regulator switch behind the control knob fails. We test the hotplate for electrical continuity first. If the plate is intact, the fault is usually a burnt contact inside the control switch, which will need to be swapped out.
Slow cooking times are often caused by a failing thermostat that cuts the heat off too early, or a faulty door seal letting hot air escape. On fan-assisted models, a broken fan motor might stop circulating the hot air around the cavity. We check the door hinges, seals, and internal components to find the problem.
