Know the home, know the fault
The housing across Torquay ranges from large Victorian properties with Italianate features built by wealthy residents in areas like the Lincombes, to private post-war high-rise flats standing above the harbour cliffs. The town grew by merging several smaller settlements, so local kitchens vary greatly in size and design. Generally, larger kitchens have room for wide American-style fridge freezers, whereas smaller spaces might rely on integrated models hidden behind cabinet doors to maximise floor space. Whether a property is a modern apartment or an older house, a broken cooling appliance requires attention. Regardless of whether a unit is freestanding or integrated, cooling appliances develop similar faults over time. One issue is when the freezer section continues to freeze food but the fridge compartment becomes warm. This happens when the defrost heater fails or a fan motor stops circulating cold air between the two zones. Frost and solid ice build-up inside the freezer points to a broken defrost timer or a damaged door seal letting humid air inside. Water pooling under the salad crisper drawers or leaking onto the floor is another fault, which is generally caused by a blocked defrost drain tube. Noisy running can indicate a failing compressor or a worn fan bearing, while faulty controls might stop the appliance from regulating its temperature. When a fridge freezer stops working properly, we travel out from our Plymouth base to repair it in your home. During a visit, we look at the specific symptoms your appliance is showing, checking the compressor, thermostats, fans and defrost components. We work on electric cooling appliances and electric cookers, though please note we do not repair gas hobs or any gas appliance.

Call 01752 922765Water pooling under the salad crisper drawers is usually caused by a blocked defrost drain hole. When the fridge runs its automatic defrost cycle, the melted water cannot escape down the tube to the evaporation tray. Clearing the blockage allows the water to drain away properly and stops it leaking onto the floor.
A loud buzzing or humming noise can indicate a failing compressor struggling to pump refrigerant. Alternatively, a rattling or grinding sound might come from a worn condenser fan motor or an evaporator fan blade hitting a build-up of ice. We check the moving parts to locate the exact source of the noise.
This happens when cold air cannot circulate from the freezer into the fridge section. The fault is usually a broken evaporator fan motor or a failed defrost system that has allowed ice to block the air vents. We inspect the fan and the defrost heater to restore the correct airflow.
