Know the home, know the fault
Properties around here range from mid-nineteenth century miners' houses to modern builds for commuters working in Plymouth. The local Bedford style of architecture is distinct, with Bedford Cottages seen across the area. In older properties, kitchen space can be tight, meaning a fridge is sometimes pushed hard against a wall or fitted into a small alcove. Fridges need adequate ventilation around the condenser coils at the back to release heat. Without enough airflow, the compressor has to work harder to maintain the internal temperature, which puts extra strain on the cooling system and can lead to premature wear. When a fridge struggles to cool evenly, it might be due to a failing thermostat or a degraded door seal letting warm room air inside. This extra moisture often leads to ice building up on the back wall or water pooling inside the cabinet, eventually leaking onto the floor. If the appliance is constantly running, clicking, or making new noises, the compressor or its start relay might be struggling. A fridge that is too cold can freeze fresh food, which points to a temperature sensor fault rather than a refrigerant issue. Keeping the drain hole clear helps prevent water pooling. Whether you live near Whitchurch Down or in one of the surrounding villages, we repair appliances in customers' homes. During a visit, we look at fridges that are warm or not cooling evenly, investigate water pooling inside or on the floor, and check for ice building up on the back wall. We also inspect appliances for constant running, clicking or new noises, alongside testing faulty lights, thermostats and door seals.

Call 01752 922765Water pooling inside a fridge usually happens when the condensation drain hole gets blocked. Moisture from the air naturally condenses on the cold back wall and drips down into a small channel. If food particles or debris block the drain hole, the water overflows into the bottom of the fridge and can eventually leak onto the floor.
A compressor will run constantly if the fridge is struggling to reach its set temperature. This can happen if the door seal is split, allowing warm air to enter the cabinet. A faulty thermostat might also fail to tell the compressor when to turn off. Poor ventilation around the back of the appliance can cause similar cooling issues.
Ice builds up on the back wall when excessive moisture enters the cabinet or the appliance gets too cold. A damaged door seal is a primary cause, as it lets humid room air inside. A faulty temperature sensor can also cause the cooling system to run for too long, freezing the natural condensation before it has a chance to drain away.
