Know the home, know the fault

The town of Launceston is built on a steep landscape that rises from the River Kensey up towards the castle. The local housing stock includes older properties, with a number of Georgian houses still standing in the area. In older homes, kitchens might have uneven floors or limited ventilation space, which can affect how a fridge operates. A fridge needs adequate airflow around its condenser coils to dissipate heat effectively. If an older property has a compact or awkwardly shaped kitchen, the appliance might be pushed too tightly against a wall, forcing the compressor to work harder to maintain the correct internal temperature. When a fridge struggles to cool evenly or feels too warm inside, the issue is sometimes a failing thermostat or a degraded door seal letting cold air escape into the room. A compressor that runs constantly or makes clicking noises might be trying to compensate for this lost air, or it could indicate a fault with the start relay. Water pooling inside the cabinet or leaking onto the floor usually points to a blocked defrost drain. Ice building up on the back wall is another sign that the defrost system is not working as it should, or that warm air is entering the cabinet and condensing. We look at fridges that are warm, not cooling evenly, or making new noises. We check for faulty lights, test thermostats, and inspect door seals for gaps. If water is pooling inside or ice is building up on the back wall, we trace the fault through the defrost and drainage systems. We repair domestic appliances in customers' homes, though we do not work on gas appliances.

Water pooling inside the fridge is usually caused by a blocked defrost drain. During the normal defrost cycle, condensation drips down the back wall and into a small drain hole. If food particles or debris block this hole, the water has nowhere to go and spills into the bottom of the cabinet or onto the floor.

A fridge compressor will run continuously if it is struggling to reach the set temperature. This can happen if the door seals are degraded, allowing cold air to escape, or if the condenser coils are restricted by poor ventilation. Clicking noises alongside constant running can indicate a failing start relay or a compressor fault.

Ice builds up when warm, moist air enters the fridge and freezes against the cold back wall. This is often due to a torn or loose door seal failing to keep room air out. It can also happen if the internal defrost system develops a fault, preventing the appliance from melting away normal frost accumulation.
