Know the home, know the fault

The housing stock on this part of the southwestern coast reflects a long history. The modern urban area was formed by merging smaller historical settlements, before expanding after a railway station opened. Wealthy Victorians built large villas with Italianate features, while post-war development brought private high-rise flats above the harbour cliffs. In these varied properties across Torquay, kitchens are fitted with built-in and combination microwaves to save counter space. These integrated units are fixed directly into the cabinetry, meaning a breakdown requires an in-home repair rather than simply unplugging the appliance and taking it to a shop. Built-in and combination models share similar failure patterns. A microwave might run normally, with the internal light on and the cooling fan sounding, but completely fail to heat the food. This points to a fault in the high-voltage circuit, such as a failed magnetron, capacitor or diode. Turntables that refuse to rotate usually have a burnt-out synchronous motor beneath the cavity floor or a broken plastic drive coupler. Door latch mechanisms contain multiple microswitches designed to cut power if the door opens. When these switches fail or the plastic hooks snap, the appliance will not start. Control panels and digital displays can also become unresponsive over time. Travelling out to places like Chelston, we repair integrated and combination microwaves in the kitchen. We check units that run without heating, investigate turntables that will not turn, and test door latches, switches, controls and displays. We only repair electric cooking appliances and do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

When a microwave sounds like it is running but the food stays cold, the issue is usually within the high-voltage circuit. The magnetron, which generates the microwave energy, may have failed. Other components in this circuit, such as the high-voltage diode or capacitor, can also break down and prevent heating.

A turntable that will not rotate is typically caused by a faulty synchronous motor located under the floor of the microwave cavity. If the motor is receiving power but not turning, it needs replacing. Alternatively, the plastic drive coupler that connects the motor to the glass tray might be cracked.

A completely dead microwave can be caused by a blown main fuse, which sometimes fails due to a faulty door microswitch. The door latches contain several switches that must engage in a specific sequence. If a switch is defective or the latch mechanism is broken, the appliance will not power on.
