Know the home, know the fault

Millbrook sits at the top of a tidal creek on the Rame Peninsula, an area with a strong rural setting based around the local fishing industry. The creek was blocked off in 1977 to stop flooding, and the settlement itself became a separate parish from a neighbouring area during the nineteenth century. In rural and coastal properties, kitchens might have limited counter space, leading owners to choose built-in or combination microwaves to save room. When these integrated units stop working, they are harder to pull out and replace than freestanding versions, making an in-home repair a practical option. A combination microwave has heating elements and a fan alongside the standard microwave components. If the unit runs but does not heat food, the magnetron or its associated high-voltage components might have failed. A turntable that refuses to rotate usually points to a faulty synchronous motor under the floor of the cavity, or a broken drive coupling. Door latches contain multiple microswitches designed to cut power when opened. If these switches fail or fall out of alignment, the appliance will not start, or it might blow a fuse immediately. Control panels and displays can also become unresponsive over time, leaving you unable to select a cooking programme. We repair built-in and combination microwaves in your home, looking at units that will not heat, turntables that will not turn, door latch and switch faults, as well as unresponsive controls and displays. We also cover nearby towns like Torpoint and Saltash, though we only work on electric appliances and do not repair gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

A microwave that sounds like it is working but produces no heat usually has a fault in the high-voltage circuit. The magnetron generates the microwave energy, and if it fails, the food stays cold. Other components like the high-voltage diode or capacitor can also cause this issue and require testing.

The glass plate sits on a coupling driven by a small synchronous motor located under the cavity floor. If liquid spills inside the appliance, it can seep through the motor shaft opening and damage the motor. A broken plastic drive coupling or a wiring fault will also stop the rotation.

Microwave doors have a series of safety microswitches that must activate in a specific sequence. If the door hooks are damaged or a switch falls out of alignment, the mechanism creates a deliberate short circuit to blow the main fuse. This prevents the appliance from running with an unsealed door.
