Know the home, know the fault
Properties situated between the rivers Plym and Tamar range from post-war low density suburban housing to innovative prefabricated homes built rapidly during the nineteen fifties. Plymouth also has a large student presence due to the local university, alongside major new housing settlements developing to the east at Sherford and Langage. In shared student accommodation or busy family kitchens in dispersed suburbia, built-in and combination microwaves see heavy daily use. A built-in microwave saves counter space, but when it stops working, it cannot simply be swapped out like a basic freestanding model. When a combination microwave runs but fails to heat the food, the issue is usually inside the high voltage circuit. The magnetron, which generates the microwave energy, can fail, or the high voltage diode might break down. If the turntable will not turn, food heats unevenly. This points to a faulty synchronous motor under the floor of the cavity, or a broken glass tray coupling. Door latch and switch faults will stop the appliance from starting at all. A microwave has several interlock switches designed to cut the power if the door opens, and if the plastic latch mechanism wears out, these switches will not engage properly. We repair built-in and combination microwaves in your home. During a visit, we look at microwaves that run but do not heat, turntables that refuse to rotate, unresponsive controls and displays, and faulty door latches. We work on electric cooking appliances only and do not repair gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance. Our focus is entirely on diagnosing the electrical and mechanical components.

Call 01752 922765When a microwave sounds like it is running normally but the food stays cold, the high voltage circuit is usually at fault. The magnetron that produces the microwave energy may have failed, or the high voltage capacitor or diode might be broken. These components require electrical testing to diagnose.
A turntable that will not turn is usually caused by a faulty synchronous motor located underneath the microwave cavity. Alternatively, the plastic or glass coupling that connects the motor to the turntable tray might be cracked. If the roller ring under the glass tray is jammed, it will also prevent rotation.
If the display is blank and the appliance will not start, the main internal fuse may have blown. This often happens if a door interlock switch fails or if the door latch mechanism is worn out. The microwave cuts power for safety if it detects the door is not securely closed.
