Know the home, know the fault

Properties on the Rame Peninsula sit in a rural setting where the local fishing industry remains a fixture. The settlement sits at the head of a tidal creek, which was dammed in 1977 to prevent flooding, and it became a separate parish from Maker in 1869. In rural and coastal homes, washing machines work hard to process heavy outdoor clothing and muddy fabrics. Sand and grit from outdoor gear can easily find their way into the drum during a wash cycle. Over time, these abrasive particles accumulate inside the machine, putting extra strain on moving parts and the drainage system. When grit and debris bypass the drum seal, they gather in the filter or the pump chamber, leading to a machine that will not drain or spin. A blocked pump prevents the water from leaving the drum, which triggers error codes or stops the cycle entirely. Heavy loads of thick outdoor clothing can also cause excessive vibration on spin, eventually wearing out the shock absorbers or drum bearings, resulting in a very noisy drum. We diagnose draining, spinning, filling and heating faults, alongside leaks from seals, hoses and the pump area. Other mechanical issues include door locks that fail to engage and doors that will not open or close at the end of a wash. When we arrive at properties near landmarks like Innsworke Mill Boat Yard, we test the appliance in your home to diagnose the issue. If a washing machine trips the electrics, we check the heating element, motor and internal wiring for electrical shorts. We also look at the water inlet valves if the machine will not fill or start.

Excessive vibration usually happens when the machine is unbalanced. Washing a single heavy item, like a thick coat, causes the drum to throw its weight to one side. If the load is balanced but the machine still shakes violently, the internal shock absorbers or suspension springs may be worn out and require replacement.

A door will remain locked if the machine detects water still inside the drum. This is a safety feature to prevent flooding. If the drum is completely empty, the door interlock mechanism itself might have failed mechanically or electrically, preventing it from releasing the catch when the cycle finishes.

An appliance trips the electrics when there is a short circuit or an earth leak. In a washing machine, this is most likely caused by a faulty heating element or water leaking onto internal electrical components like the motor. We test the internal wiring and components to diagnose the electrical fault.
