Homes in Ivybridge

Know the home, know the fault

The housing landscape in Ivybridge varies significantly, from Victorian architecture in the centre to semi-detached properties built on steep roads. There are also new residential spaces being created within the historic paper mill buildings. Electric range cookers are substantial appliances that demand considerable kitchen space.

Why range cookers go wrong

What we look for

When a large cooking appliance develops a fault, it can affect just one section or the entire unit. A main or secondary oven not heating is a standard issue, usually indicating a failed heating element or a malfunctioning thermostat. If the internal fan stops working, the oven will struggle to distribute heat evenly. Grill and hob faults might involve a single cooking zone failing to reach temperature or a control switch breaking behind the fascia. Because these units draw a significant amount of power, a degraded component or damaged wiring can easily cause the cooker to trip the household electrics.

When we visit

From your call to repaired

Repairing these appliances takes place directly in your kitchen, whether you live near the Viaduct over the River Erme or out towards Cornwood. During a visit, the focus is on testing the controls, fans and thermostats to isolate the electrical fault. We look at why a specific oven compartment remains cold, why a grill fails to glow, or investigate the internal wiring when the appliance trips the electrics. Our Plymouth-based domestic appliance repair service covers electric and induction cooking equipment only, meaning we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

This happens when a component develops an electrical short to the earth. In electric range cookers, the most likely culprit is a degraded heating element in the main oven, secondary oven, or grill. When the element casing splits, moisture or internal wire contact causes a short circuit, tripping your household breaker to protect the wiring.

If the fan is spinning and the indicator light is on but there is no heat, the fan element has likely failed. The element is a circular coil behind the back panel of the oven cavity. Over time, the constant heating and cooling cycles cause the internal wire to break, stopping it from generating heat.

A single unresponsive hob zone usually points to a failed heating element under the glass or a faulty control switch behind the front panel. If the switch contacts burn out, power cannot reach the zone. We test the controls and the hob element to find out where the circuit has failed.
