Know the home, know the fault

There are also new homes being created inside the historic paper mill buildings. In older terraced properties, space for utility appliances can be tight, meaning a tumble dryer might be stacked above a washing machine or pushed into a narrow alcove. When a dryer is installed in a confined space, restricted airflow can make it work harder to expel warm, damp air, which places extra strain on the internal components over time. Restricted airflow or a build-up of lint inside the cabinet can lead to a dryer running but failing to heat. The thermal overload cut-out might trip to prevent overheating, or the heating element itself can fail. If the drum will not turn, the drive belt has usually snapped or slipped off the motor pulley, though a worn motor capacitor can also stop the drum from starting its rotation. Condenser models rely on a clean heat exchanger and a functioning pump to move moisture into the water container. When a dryer stops mid-cycle or will not start at all, the issue could be a faulty door switch, a blocked condenser unit, or a full water container triggering a sensor. Noisy running usually points to worn drum support rollers or degraded bearings. When repairing a tumble dryer, we look at machines that run but do not heat, drums that will not turn, and units that stop mid-cycle or refuse to start. We also investigate condenser and water container faults, as well as noisy running. Please note that while we repair electric cooking appliances, we do not work on gas cookers, gas hobs or any gas appliance.

A dryer that tumbles without heating usually has a tripped thermal overload thermostat or a broken heating element. This happens when airflow is restricted by a blocked lint filter or a clogged condenser unit. We check the element, thermostats and the internal airflow paths to locate the broken component.

If you can hear the motor running but the drum remains still, the drive belt has likely snapped. Belts degrade over time and eventually break under the weight of wet clothes. If the motor hums but will not start, the motor start capacitor might have failed and stopped providing power.

Condenser dryers will halt a cycle if the water container is full or if the sensor incorrectly detects that it is full. A blocked pump or a faulty microswitch can also interrupt the cycle. We look at the water container, the pump mechanism and the door catch to resolve this.
