Know the home, know the fault

The settlement of Torpoint on the Rame Peninsula in southeast Cornwall was originally built in the eighteenth century as a planned town. It expanded as workers from the Devonport Dockyard settled across the tidal estuary, and the population increased again when the Royal Navy established HMS Raleigh here. In many homes, a washing machine is plumbed in under a kitchen counter or kept in a utility space. In these layouts, the machine is pushed back against the wall, which can put pressure on the fill and drain hoses behind the appliance. When a washing machine is pushed tightly into a gap, the inlet hose can kink, restricting the water supply and causing the machine to stop filling. The constant movement during a spin cycle might also cause the drain hose to rub against the cabinet or the wall, eventually leading to a leak. Inside the appliance, the pump area can develop faults. Coins, hair grips, or small items left in pockets bypass the drum and lodge in the pump filter, stopping the water from draining. If the water cannot drain, the machine will not advance to the spin cycle, leaving clothes sitting in dirty water. Other faults include door locks that refuse to release at the end of a cycle, or heating elements that fail and trip the household electrics. When visiting homes near Antony House, we diagnose machines that will not start, drain, fill, or spin. We look at leaks from seals, hoses, and the pump area, as well as doors that will not open or close. We also investigate appliances showing error codes, tripping the electrics, or producing excessive vibration and noisy drums on a spin cycle.

Excessive vibration usually happens when the machine is not sitting level on the floor, or if the load inside the drum is unbalanced. Heavy items like towels can bunch up on one side. If the feet are level and the load is balanced, the suspension legs or drum bearings might have worn out.

A door will stay locked if the machine detects water left in the drum. This is a safety feature to prevent flooding, usually caused by a blockage in the pump or drain hose. If the drum is completely empty, the door interlock mechanism itself may have failed and will need to be replaced.

An appliance trips the electrics when an internal component develops an electrical fault and shorts to earth. In a washing machine, this is most likely the heating element, which can degrade over time and expose its internal wiring to water. A faulty motor or a damaged control board can also cause the electrics to trip.
