Know the home, know the fault
Launceston is set in a predominantly rural area that supports the surrounding agricultural economy. The housing stock includes older properties, and a number of Georgian houses can be seen. The landscape itself is generally steep, rising from the River Kensey up to the hill where the castle stands. In rural or older homes, washing machines are heavily relied upon to handle muddy outdoor clothing or daily household laundry. Moving a heavy appliance for repair in an older property with uneven floors or tight utility spaces requires a methodical approach. When a washing machine stops working, the symptoms usually point to specific internal components. A machine that will not drain or spin might have a blockage in the pump filter, caused by pocket debris, or a failing drain pump. If the drum is excessively noisy or vibrates violently on a spin cycle, the suspension legs or drum bearings may have worn out. Leaks can develop from degraded door seals, split internal hoses or around the pump area. Sometimes the appliance will simply not start, which might involve a faulty door lock that prevents the cycle from initiating, or an internal issue that causes the machine to trip the electrics and display an error code. During a visit, we look at draining, spinning, filling and heating faults. We check for leaks from seals and hoses, examine doors that will not open or close, and investigate machines that trip the electrics. We also assess noisy drums and excessive vibration on spin. We do not work on gas appliances.

Call 01752 922765Excessive vibration on a spin cycle usually indicates an issue with the suspension system or the drum bearings. Washing machines have internal shock absorbers and springs to keep the drum stable. If these wear out, the drum moves erratically. It can also happen if the machine is not sitting level on the floor.
A door that will not open is usually caused by water remaining in the drum or a faulty door interlock mechanism. If the machine fails to drain completely, a safety sensor keeps the door locked. Alternatively, the electrical release in the lock itself might have failed, preventing it from disengaging when the cycle finishes.
When an appliance trips the electrics during the heating phase, the wash heater element is the most likely cause. As the element degrades over time, its internal insulation can break down, allowing electrical current to leak to the earth connection. The household safety breaker detects this fault and instantly cuts the power.
