Know the home, know the fault
Properties built on the steep landscape of Launceston, which rises from the River Kensey up to the castle, include older housing such as Georgian homes. Range cookers are heavy appliances that are difficult to move once installed, especially in older properties where floors might be uneven. When a fault develops, repairing the cooker in place is the standard approach. We work on electric and induction models only, as we do not repair gas appliances. A large cooker has multiple heating zones that can fail independently. If the main or secondary oven stops heating while the indicator lights remain on, a fan element has usually failed. Grill and hob faults occur when a ceramic or induction zone stops responding to the dial or touch controls. Thermostats regulate the internal temperature, and a faulty one will cause the oven to either burn food or fail to reach the required heat. Another issue is the appliance tripping the electrics, which happens when moisture enters a heating element or a wire shorts against the metal chassis. During a visit, we look at the controls, fans and thermostats to identify the reason a cooking zone is not working. Testing the internal wiring helps locate the source of an electrical trip. We dismantle the necessary panels to access the faulty components, whether the problem lies in the main oven, the secondary cavity, or the electric hob on top.

Call 01752 922765When the fan spins and the indicator lights come on but there is no heat, the fan element has usually failed. The element sits at the back of the cavity and can break down over time. We dismantle the rear panel inside the oven to test the element and check the associated wiring for any faults.
A trip usually happens when an electrical component shorts out to the metal body of the cooker. This is a built-in safety mechanism. The fault is sometimes caused by a split heating element in the oven or grill, or by damaged wiring behind the control panel. We test the internal circuits to locate the short.
Induction hobs require compatible pans with a magnetic base to activate the heating zone. If the pans are correct but the hob still fails to heat, there may be a fault with the touch controls or the internal generator board. We look at the hob components to find out why the zones are not responding.
