Homes in Launceston

Know the home, know the fault

The housing stock in this part of Cornwall includes older properties, with a number of Georgian houses still standing in Launceston. The area is largely rural and supports an agricultural economy, while also attracting visitors to the castle and heritage railway. In older homes where kitchen or utility space might be limited, a combined washer dryer is a practical choice. These machines handle both washing and drying in a single cabinet. This saves floor space but means the internal components have to work hard to manage water, heat and lint during a full laundry cycle. When a washer dryer stops working, the fault can lie in either the washing or drying system. Drying issues include clothes remaining damp or cycles that never seem to finish. This happens when the heater element fails, the fan stops circulating hot air, or lint builds up and blocks the condensing chamber. Washing faults involve the drum refusing to spin, water not draining, or the machine failing to fill. Leaks can occur from a split door seal or a damaged internal hose. Meanwhile, control board faults might throw up error codes and stop the machine mid-cycle, locking the door. Whether a machine is in a property near St Stephen's or further out, we repair washer dryers directly in the home. We check the heating elements, thermostats, drain pumps and motor brushes to find out why the appliance has stopped washing or drying. We also travel to nearby towns like Callington and Tavistock.

This usually points to a fault in the condensing system. Washer dryers use cold water to condense moisture out of the hot air inside the drum. If the condenser chamber is blocked with lint, or the cold water valve fails to open, the moist air cannot escape. The clothes will heat up but remain wet at the end of the cycle.

A failure to drain is typically caused by a blockage in the pump filter or a faulty drain pump. Coins, hair and lint can bypass the drum and jam the pump impeller. If the pump motor has burnt out, the machine will not be able to empty the drum, which also prevents the appliance from moving on to the spin cycle.

Front leaks usually originate from the rubber door seal. Over time, the seal can degrade, tear or be punctured by sharp objects left in pockets. Water can also escape if the door hinge drops, preventing the glass bowl from pressing tightly against the rubber. We inspect the seal and door alignment to locate the exact source of the leak.
