Homes in Launceston

Know the home, know the fault

The housing stock in this part of Cornwall includes older properties, with some Georgian houses remaining from earlier periods of development. In older homes, kitchens are sometimes retrofitted to accommodate integrated fridge freezers behind cabinet doors, while larger rural kitchens might have the floor space required for wide American-style models. When a fridge freezer develops a fault, the symptoms usually point to a specific component failure. A situation where the freezer still works but the fridge section feels warm usually indicates a problem with the defrost system or the fan that circulates cold air between the two compartments. Frost and solid ice build-up in a frost-free model suggests a failed defrost heater, thermostat, or timer. Water leaks pooling inside beneath the salad crisper drawers or leaking out onto the floor are typically caused by a blocked defrost drain tube. Noisy running can stem from a worn compressor or a failing evaporator fan motor, while faulty controls might prevent the appliance from regulating its internal temperature correctly. During a visit, we examine the appliance in your home to identify the fault. We check the compressor, fans, and defrost components to find out why the fridge is warm while the freezer works, or the reverse. We also investigate frost and ice build-up, trace the source of water leaks inside the cabinet or onto the floor, and assess noisy running and faulty controls on both freestanding and integrated units.

Water pooling under the salad crisper drawers is usually caused by a blocked defrost drain. During the automatic defrost cycle, condensation runs down the back wall into a small drain hole. If food debris or packaging blocks this hole, the water overflows into the base of the fridge and can eventually leak onto the floor.

A frost-free freezer uses a heater to melt away ice from the evaporator coils. If the defrost heater, the defrost timer, or the sensor fails, ice will continue to accumulate. This build-up restricts airflow, which can eventually cause the fridge section to become warm while the freezer remains cold.

Unusual noises usually come from one of the moving parts. A loud buzzing or vibrating sound can indicate a failing compressor or worn rubber mounting grommets. Alternatively, if the noise sounds like a scraping or rattling fan, the evaporator fan motor might be obstructed by ice build-up or suffering from worn bearings.
